The Gardener
In bird watching mode |
Joyce is responsible for the gardens at Chenies. She was destined to have green fingers from the earliest days when her farther would take her walking, with her dolls pram, in the woods around their home on the outskirts of Leeds. Deep in the woods, almost mysteriously, her dad would produce a trowel
and by the time they arrived back home the bottom of the pram would be full of leaf compost!
The variety of vegetation, water features and bird feeders which are kept stocked all round the year, ensure we have a rich variety of birds visiting the gardens. In addition to the common garden birds such as robins, sparrows, chaffinch, green finch, starling, blackbird, thrushes, etc. we also see greater spotted woodpecker, sparrow hawk, grey wagtail, pied wagtail, nuthatch, long tailed tits, siskin, bullfinch, crow, spotted flycatcher.
Perhaps the highlight is when a kingfisher sits on a stem by the pond. Happily, unlike the heron which occasionally visits the garden, the kingfisher does not seriously threaten the fish stock!
